Almost-Instant Breakfast

The worst-kept secret in the whole foods and wellness world is the green smoothie.  I swear by these suckers--days that start with a green smoothie almost always end up full of healthy choices.  There are endless combinations of flavors available to you, but here's a recipe for my current favorite version:

Tropical Green Smoothie

2-4 handfuls spinach (or other greens, but spinach is a nice mellow "gateway green")

1-2 ripe bananas (the more bananas - and the riper they are - the sweeter your smoothie will be)

1/2 to 1 cup frozen pineapple or tropical frozen fruit mix

water or unsweetened non-dairy milk as needed to blend

1. Throw all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth.  If you don't have a high-powered blender (like a Vitamix or Blend-Tec), you may want to start with just greens and liquid, then add the other ingredients one at a time.

2. Enjoy!

Tips: Try a higher banana-to-greens ratio when you're first venturing into the world of green smoothies, then gradually increase the greens and decrease the bananas.  When I make these at home, I can't even taste the greens anymore, but guests can always tell right away.  Eventually, it'll be time to experiment with no-banana smoothies, but I'm a champion of this amazing natural sweetener!  Other delicious combos:  greens-banana-frozen strawberries, greens-frozen bananas-orange juice, greens-frozen bananas-almond milk-vanilla extract.  If you have flax or chia seeds, throw a tablespoon in for a nutritional boost.
